SMILE ANALYSIS

A Prosthodontist is a master of Smile Analysis and design relating the appearance to the function of the oral cavity. All must be in optimal working order as well as aesthetically appealing. A successful outcome is dependent on astute diagnostic skills and attention to detail.

IMPLANTS

A dental implant is a Titanium metal post that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gums. Once successfully fused to the bone, it serves to replace a missing tooth and supports a replacement crown, bridge or denture (removable teeth). An advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold the new replacement tooth/teeth in place. They feel and function like natural teeth.

CROWN AND BRIDGES

Dental crowns (caps) and bridges are porcelain teeth that are individually produced to meet your own personal needs. They are either supported by the natural teeth or by implants. A bridge is used when there are one or more missing teeth. Porcelain crowns are mainly used to restore severely broken-down teeth. They appear very natural, leaving no black line at the gum level as seen in some traditional crowns, which have had a metal backing. They are permanently fixed in the mouth.

VENEERS

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell which is bonded onto the front surface of a tooth to improve its colour, shape and/or proportion. They may be used to align crowding or protruding teeth, to close gaps or to lighten teeth. Their strength and appearance rivals that of natural teeth and they are used to achieve long-lasting changes in a smile.

DENTURES

Dentures are acrylic teeth which are constructed to replace some or all missing teeth. They are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the mouth. Conventional dentures are removable. However, there are many different denture designs, some of which rely on clasping onto the teeth or dental implants. They are commonly known as false teeth.

FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION/ MULTI DISCIPLINARY TREATMENT

Full Mouth Rehabilitations correct imperfections in bite positions and enhance the appearance of the smile. All the teeth or replacement implants or bridges are involved in the therapy. Anyone with short, worn teeth or those that are chipped and broken throughout the mouth would be an excellent candidate. A multitude of other dental specialists and medical personnel are often involved. TOOTH-COLOURED FILLINGS OR BONDING

These are restorations which appear the same colour as your natural teeth. Dental Bonding might be utilized as a way to improve the appearance of a defect found on the surface of the tooth, to replace tooth structure that has chipped or broken off or to repair damage caused by tooth decay. This technique can also be used to resurface the entire front surface of a tooth to improve its cosmetic appearance.

GUMMY SMILE

A gummy smile, an excessive gingival display in dental terms, is when you smile and too much gum tissue shows above the top teeth.

There are a number of causes of a gummy smile. The most common ones are:

- Teeth that appear short because they erupted improperly and remain partially covered by gum tissue

- Teeth that are small in comparison to the gums due to genetics or wear

- An upper lip that is too short

- A hyperactive upper lip that is normal in length when the face is resting but lifts too high when smiling exposing a lot of gum tissue

- Gums that are long or enlarged, known as gingival hypertrophy

- An overgrowth of the upper jaw, called vertical maxillary excess, that makes gums bulge out

You may notice that the causes are all related to the teeth, lips, jaws or gums, which happen to be the key components that dictate your smile aesthetics. It’s all about proportion and positioning and when one piece of the smile puzzle isn’t correct, it can throw everything off. In the majority of instances, the condition behind a gummy smile is genetic so there’s very little one can do to prevent it.

DENTAL COSMETIC RESHAPING

Dental reshaping and contouring is a procedure that corrects minor crooked, chipped, cracked or overlapping teeth in just one session. The teeth are left smooth and polished. This technique is often used in conjunction with bonding to improve the appearance of a tooth or teeth.

TEETH WHITENING

This is a safe non-invasive and relatively pain-free procedure. Discoloured and stained teeth can be treated with great outcomes. Using a teeth whitening process can be one of the simplest and most economical ways to make a substantial cosmetic improvement to a smile.
